Medieval Beehive

Built on the majestic rocky peaks of Skellig Michael Island, the Skellig Michael Monastery contains six well preserved beehive shaped monks’ huts. Constructed by hand approximately 1500 years ago, the huts were designed to be dry inside. The rocks were slanted so that the rain fell outward. The monastery also includes a church, walled garden, early oratory, and cemetery with 22 grave slabs. Off the west coast of Ireland, the monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
