Bara Tribe Burial in Canyon Wall

Ancient tradition dictates that the Bara tribes of Madagascar use mountain caves for burial of family members. Following a treacherous climb up the canyon wall, these tribesmen were burying several colorful coffins in a cave in Isalo National Park, southwestern Madagascar. Ihosy, a nearby city, is the capital of the Bara tribes.

We were in Isalo Park with a guide the morning this photo was taken, looking for lemurs. Instead, using my camera’s zoom lens as binoculars, we were able to observe the sacred burial of the colorful coffins of several deceased Bara tribe members.
