Bara Tribe Burial Procession
As long required by tradition, members of a local Bara tribe have processed with colorful coffins to a cave for burial in the canyon wall of Isalo National Park. Such remote caves are sacred to the Bara. Southwest Madagascar is home to the Bara tribes.
We were in Isalo Park with a guide the morning this photo was taken, looking for lemurs. Instead, using my camera’s zoom lens as binoculars, we were able to observe the procession prior to the sacred burial of the colorful coffins of several deceased Bara tribe members.
